We asked JYM students to tell you about it. And this is what they said:
"Full year was without question the best way to do a study abroad program. The two semesters went so quickly! I can't imagine only doing one."
"By going one year you really get to know people and understand Germany. One semester cannot provide that."
"It takes almost an entire semester to really adjust to living abroad. One semester would have just felt like a vacation. Being there for a year really made Munich home."
"I think [the full year] is a definite advantage. You get a chance to participate in internships or get jobs over the break. You get to know Germans better it seems."
"When I think of everything I did and saw and the people I met - I would have missed out on that if I had not gone on JYM for year. And it went by so fast!"
"I felt that is was Christmastime when I really was feeling at home and comfortable. It really takes a semester to begin to let it all click."
"It takes at least 4-6 months to really become comfortable speaking German."
"You get to meet more people during the whole year. I would have been extremely sad had I only gone for one semester after I saw how great it was there."
"The best thing about going for the year is the bond you make with the other year students. It's reallly something special."
"Full year is the best, language skills really started to kick in after 7 months, comfort level got better every day. First semester was great because I made friends in the second half."
"The first semester is time to adjust, the second is time to enjoy it as home."
"By the end you actually feel you are living in München, it's like home."
So there you have it. Hopefully you've detected a common theme:
• it takes time to really become fluent in German
• it takes time to adjust to living abroad
• it takes time to really become fully immersed in everyday German life
• it takes time to discover and experience all that Munich has to offer
If that's what you want, go for the year. It's as simple as that!
