What makes JYM unique?

JYM — a Distinguished Tradition
Students who study abroad in Germany with JYM become part of a distinguished tradition. Not only did the junior year abroad movement in Germany begin with JYM, but with the re-opening of JYM by Wayne State University in 1953, JYM became the first junior year abroad program in postwar Germany. 3500 students from 500 US colleges and universities have studied abroad in Munich since 1953 with JYM — America's oldest study abroad program in Germany.

"I've had another study abroad experience that I really enjoyed, but JYM is unique because it was a program that was designed a long time ago and the spirit of the program is different than what other study abroad programs offer." (Maria, The George Washington University)

Our Mission — What's yours?
JYM continues to expand upon and enhance a singular mission: to integrate US undergraduate students with studies in their major at a German university. Unlike most study abroad options today, JYM students are enrolled as students at a German university, and are not limited to courses offered by the program. JYM students have access to the full curriculum at LMU Munich appropriate to their German language abilities and class ranking, and yet they may design their study abroad experience according to the goals they themselves want to achieve.

Whatever it is you could want to do here, JYM will find a way to make it possible." (Matt, University of Pennsylvania)

JYM — Not a "Factory Program"
Because we have a clearly defined mission focusing on one country, and are not a so-called "program provider" that sends thousands of students to all corners of the world, we are able to offer exceptional personal service and support — from the moment students first inquire about the program to long after they have returned to the States. With JYM, students and their parents have only one number to call, with someone at the end of the line with a name and voice you will recognize who answers your call.

"I loved the fact that JYM was not a 'factory program.' JYM really cares about the students and provides amazing opportunities Berlin Seminar, internships, hiking in the Alps, adventures in Budapest, etc. I truly believe JYM is the BEST study abroad program in Germany." (Megan, Kenyon College)

When HP is not a Printer
The reputation of a study abroad program rests upon the shoulders of its resident director. JYM's resident director is Prof. Hans-Peter Söder (aka Herr Söder or HP), holds a Ph.D. in German Intellectual History from Cornell University. An active scholar of German philosophy, whose publications range from Nietzsche to Postmodernity and the state of the German university, Prof. Söder has unrivaled academic credentials to individually challenge, assist and mentor students as they forge their own way through the study abroad experience. (Plus he's got a great sense of humor, and lots of old bikes! By the way, the program director was a JY student.)

Honors Program for the Study of European Ideas
JYM can be equally challenging and rewarding enough for many. But for those who wish to go above and beyond, we offer the Honors Program for the Study of European Ideas. Recent students have been selected for internships at the German Bundestag, or invited to participate in the Young Professionals Program sponsored by the Aspen Institute Berlin.

European City Seminars
"Ich lerne sehen" is the recurring theme of Rilke's novel about a young poet in Paris, and the conceptual framework for JYM's optional European City Seminars. More than travel tours, these seminars to such places as Berlin, Budapest, Ljubljana, Prague, Vienna, Weimar and beyond, provoke inquiry into Europe as an opened book that needs to be not only seen, but also understood.

Affordable Study Abroad — Why pay more for less?
JYM is a self-financing program at Wayne State University; we don't use our program fees to subsidize other programs around the world. This allows us to operate the program at cost, and offer you a study abroad experience that is thousands less than other study abroad programs in Germany.
Unless you have money to burn, why pay more for less?

Scholarships
You'd be hard-pressed to find a study abroad program in Germany that distributes $50,000 in scholarship awards annually. But we do - thanks to alumni and friends of JYM who believe that study abroad should be an affordable opportunity for everyone.

JYM has gone far beyond its origins in the junior year abroad tradition. At a time when more and more students wish to add study abroad experience to their resumes, we want you to view study abroad as part of a continuum of experiences, rather than as a singular episodic adventure.

Today we especially encourage our students to view their JYM experience within the larger context of sustaining productive German-American relations. To this end, we have introduced a progressive series of programs that take place before, during, and well beyond our students' participation in the program to nurture the next generation of transatlantic leaders, colleagues and team-workers.

JYM's holistic approach to education abroad is unique. No other program has introduced initiatives that . . .

· reward talented first year college students of German with our Munich Summer Fellows Program

· challenge high-achiever students on JYM with our Honors Program for the Study of European Ideas

· mentor graduates of JYM during their senior year with post-JYM fellowship proposals

· and assist alumni with career opportunities through our own JYM Job Board so that they can build upon their JYM experience after graduation.

Networking with Leadership
Our guest visitor and special events programs allow students to meet people with leadership responsibilities from the public and private sectors on both sides of the Atlantic, including internationally known poets, scholars, and musicians.

Alumni Job Placement
JYM has a stellar record of placing alumni in jobs that require German language proficiency and meaningful overseas experience. JYM is the only study abroad program that posts current job openings for its alumni through our JYM Job Board.

Graduate School and Fellowships
JYM has an outstanding record of supporting alumni with their applications to graduate school or with their proposals for post-JYM fellowships. Many students return to Germany soon after JYM with the Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies (Wharton School of Business), or as recipients of prestigious awards such as the German Chancellor Scholarship or Fulbright Fellowships.

Distinguished Alumni
Great careers begin somewhere, and many had their start in Munich with JYM:

· professors at the University of California-Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, Yale University and many more

· chairmen, vice-presidents, CEOs and CFOs of major corporations such as Random House, Inc. and the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, or entrepreneurs who founded their own businesses, e.g. European Computer Telecoms AG

· graduates of top-ranked law, medical, and business schools such as Georgetown, Harvard, or the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School

· successful authors, including the best-selling novelist Jonathan Franzen (JYM 1979-80).
