On-Site Orientation

Each JYM Program begins with an On-Site Orientation and Language program designed to acquaint you with your new home-away-from home:

• Practical information and tips from former students are shared about where to shop, find a used bike, grab a cheap snack, etc.

Field trips and excursions will introduce you to all that the city of Munich and its surrounding alpine countryside have to offer.

• German language instruction during Orientation is designed to help you negotiate everyday situations in your new surroundings.

• We use this period to explain the German university system as well as JYM's academic policies, and offer hands-on information about how to register for courses at LMU Munich, how to use the library, etc.

• We also use this time to begin introducing you what is expected of students at German universities, as well as the mechanics of different forms of writing you will encounter at LMU Munich, e.g. Referat, Hausarbeit, etc. These discussions will continue in the JYM course Studium an deutschen Universitäten (required of all students), when the semester begins.

• During Orientation, our Resident Director will meet with you individually to discuss your schedule of courses for the upcoming semester.

If this sounds like a lot, don't worry. You will still have enough "down time" during Orientation to explore the city on your own and settle in.

• It goes without saying that attendance and full participation is expected of all students during Orientation.
