Tyler's
Planet
The Tyler Stutzman Memorial Scholarship
Tyer
Stutzman (1979-2003) was a sophomore at Anderson University, majoring
in German and Spanish, when he was diagnosed with Acute Mylogenous
Leukemia (AML). In 2000 he began an inspirational battle against
the cancer with a bone marrow/stem cell transplant and chemotherapy.
Intent on providing information, encouragement, and hope to others
confronted with disease, Tyler chronicled his treatment over the
course of a year. The result is an award winning, feature-length
documentary film entitled Uncertain Tomorrow.
Tyler
arrived in Munich with the JYM Class of 2001/02. Despite his on-going
battle with leukemia, Tyler nevertheless produced a video in Munich
to help promote JYM for future students. His personal struggle,
combined with an intense desire to live life to its fullest and
make a difference that might benefit others, has left a lasting
impact on all of us at JYM. This was Tyler's Planet.
Just
days after returning to the US from Munich, Tyler departed for Ecuador
where he planned to spend a semester. Within a few months, however,
his leukemia relapsed. Tyler completed his studies at Anderson University
shortly before his death in May, 2003.
The
JYM Class of 2001/02 accompanied Tyler's journey, witnessed his
motivating life, and has been inspired to work towards creating
a scholarship in his memory.
