How to complete your "Proposed Schedule of Courses"
on the JYM Application Form

You must work closely with your undergraduate major advisor when completing the Proposed Schedule of Courses, so that you will be assured of receiving credit for coursework in Munich when you return to the States.

It is quite common that students make adjustments to their Proposed Schedule of Courses once they arrive in Munich. At the beginning of each semester, students submit a Final Course Schedule to the Resident Director that takes into account any substitutions or additions to the courses listed on their JYM Application. Students should email their advisor for his/her approval of any adjustments made to their original Proposed Schedule of Courses so that there are no misunderstandings later.

Please consult also with your advisor regarding any special instructions for study abroad specific to your institution (e.g. credit/course load requirements, credit for internships or independent study), and have them noted on the application.

All students are required to enroll in JY 310 and/or JY 320; all or part of this requirement may be waived if the Resident Director deems a student's German language competence sufficiently high.

Credit/Course Load
Students should register for 15 credits per semester. All students should consult with their home institution regarding any special requirements for minimum or maximum credit or course load while studying abroad. Most students take a combination of JYM, LMU Munich and TUM courses throughout the year. Please refer to the Sample Course Schedules (link above) to see how a semester might look.

LMU Munich or TUM Courses

There are three ways for you to list university courses on your Proposed Schedule of Courses:

1) simply list courses by general subject area, e.g. 19th Century Philosophy, International Relations, European History, German Drama etc., and when you arrive in Munich for Orientation, our Resident Director will help you find courses that match your interests, or

2) simply enter titles from our lists of university courses that JYM students have taken in the past, and when you arrive in Munich for Orientation, our Resident Director will help you find a similar courses currently being offered that match your interests

3) however, if your advisor needs a course description and syllabus, you will need to search for courses on your own using the LSF Online-Portal (for LMU Munich) or the Campus Management System (for TUM). Since this can be somewhat complicated if you don't know how a German university is structured, we've provided information and tips about how to search for courses online:

JYM Courses
When listing JYM courses, please take note when these courses are offered (e.g. WiSe or SoSe) as indicated on the course description.

Not all courses listed may be offered in any one year of the program and new courses may be offered as well. JYM reserves the right to require a minimum number of students to be enrolled in a JYM course before it will be offered.
