Junior Year in Freiburg (1960-1996)

In 1960, Wayne State University opened the Junior Year in Freiburg program as its second study abroad site in Germany when the number of students applying to the Junior Year in Munich exceeded the capacity of the program to accommodate them.

The Junior Year in Freiburg program was sponsored exclusively by Wayne State from 1960 to 1964. The University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Michigan joined the program as co-sponsors in 1964, followed by Michigan State University in 1968. Wayne State University remained the lead administrator of the JYF program until its closure in 1996.

More than 2,000 students participated in the Junior Year in Freiburg program from 1960 to 1996, including the current director of the Junior Year in Munich program, Mark Ferguson (JYF 1976-77).
