Illegal Drug Use

Our advice is simple and straightforward: stay away from illegal drugs. Getting expelled from JYM could be the least of your problems.

According to the ELLD* report on Germany, the possession, acquisition, cultivation, production, import, or export of illicite drugs may result in imprisonment or fine.

Furthermore, German police have an obligation to report drug offences to the public prosecutor's office, and as a rule, prosecution is mandatory.

Sentencing may be even more severe in other nations (both EU and non-EU) to which students may be planning to travel. Read the Hard Facts, and learn how to protect yourself when traveling.

And remember: once you leave the US, you can no longer count on the legal protections and rights granted to you in the US. Neither the U.S. Embassy or Consulate, nor JYM can help you if you get in trouble for illegal drug use.

* The European Legal Database on Drugs (ELLD, www.elld.emcdda.org) was established by the European Union Drugs Agency, the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA, www.emcdda.org), to provide accurate information about drug use, drug addiction treatment, and drug penalties within EU member nations.
