Benjamin
A. Gilman International Scholarships
(for students receiving Pell Grants)
The
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, sponsored
by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational
and Cultural Affairs, and administered by the Institute of International
Education (IIE), lowers barriers to undergraduate study abroad by
providing awards of up to $5,000 to undergraduates demonstrating
financial need.
There are two competition cycles: academic year/fall, and spring:

To
be eligible for a Gilman International Scholarship, an applicant
must meet all of the following criteria:
1.
The applicant is a citizen of the United States. Permanent Residents
of the United States are not eligible.
2.
The applicant is an undergraduate student in good standing at an
institution of higher education in the United States (including
both two-year and four-year institutions).
3.
The applicant is receiving federal Pell Grant funding during
the academic term of his/her application.
4.
The applicant is applying to or has been accepted for a program
of study abroad eligible for credit by the student's home institution.
Proof of program acceptance is required for final award disbursement.
5.
The applicant will not study in a country which is currently under
a Travel Warning issued by the United States Department of State.
Travel Warnings are issued when the State Department recommends
that Americans avoid a certain country. To find a list of these
countries, please see http://travel.state.gov/warnings_list.html
Additionally,
Gilman Scholarship recipients will be expected to comply with the
Fly America Act, which stipulates that recipients of federal funds
fly on US Flagged Carriers. Please see the Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ) section of the Gilman website for more information.
