Estimate of Personal Expenses

Personal expenses refer to meals, books, incidental/personal purchases, and local transportation. These amounts will vary with the Euro per Dollar exchange rate. Our estimate of basic personal expenses for 2009-10 is $3,200 per semester.

Students may wish to plan a budget which goes beyond this amount. Vacation travel, eating in restaurants, entertainment, and major purchases will certainly add to basic personal expenses.

Please note that the optional European City Seminars arranged by JYM throughout the year are not covered by the Program Fee. Past trips have included Berlin, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Lubjiana and more, and cost approximately 300 € each.

JYM students tend to find bargains and develop spending habits which optimize their financial resources. JYM students are also allowed to find part-time jobs while in Munich which can offset basic personal expenses.

When planning a budget for personal expenses, JYM suggests that students estimate approximately € 400 per month per semester. Students may wish to adjust this amount higher or lower depending on their own particular lifestyles and resources. Please note that the dollar equivalent for the Euro amounts will vary with the exchange rate. The current exchange rate can be found at www.xe.net/ucc/.

Round-trip Transatlantic Airfare:

- $1000-1200 (estimate)

The Junior Year in Munich arranges a round-trip transatlantic group flight for the full-year student group. Some students however may need to add the cost of connecting flights to the gateway airport.

The group flight is not mandatory, and students may certainly shop around for good deals. But we do strongly recommend that our students travel as a group so that our Resident Director and staff can meet them at the Munich airport and transport them to their residences.
