LOCATION
OF JYM & MAP OF MUNICH
The
JYM institute is located in the city center, surrounded by Munich's
famous museums. We are a block from the Glyptothek and the Staatliche
Antikensammlung am Königsplatz. The Alte and Neue Pinakothek
are just down the street, as is the new Pinakothek der Moderne.
Also just minutes away is the Schwabing district, famous for its
restaurants, night life, and cafes.
Although
our address is Richard Wagner Strasse 27, the entrance to JYM is
actually on the Gabelsbergerstrasse just around the corner.

Please
note that JYM is closed on German

ARRIVAL
AT THE MUNICH AIRPORT
The
Munich airport is clean, welcoming, and very well organized (Munich
Airport website).
Depending
on which airline you are flying, you'll be landing in Terminal
1 or Terminal 2. After you exit the plane, follow the crowd
to the Passport Control point. There will be two signs: one
for European Union nationals, and the other for non-European Union
nationals. After you go through Passport Control, proceed to the
Baggage Claim area (Gepäckausgabe), grab your
bag, and head for the exit (Ausgang). Just before you exit
you'll pass through Customs (Zoll).
FYI,
There is an ATM machine right in front of you when you exit Baggage
Claim & Customs at the Munich Airport.
GETTING
TO JYM FROM THE AIRPORT
There
are two ways you can get from the Munich Airport to JYM: you can
take public transportation (the S-Bahn), which I always take
(€9.50 or about $12). It's about a 37 minute ride to the Main
Train Station. You can also take a taxi, but the ride is actually
longer (45 minutes), and it'll cost you about $65 at today's exchange
rate. (You can see why I take the S-Bahn!)
Directions
to JYM with the S-Bahn Train
It is very easy to
take public transportation from the airport to downtown Munich where
JYM is located. When you exit the Baggage Claim area, look for the
S-Bahn train sign.
The
S-Bahn runs every 20 minutes, and its a 40 minute train ride to
the main station (Hauptbahnhof). There are signs above the doors
in each car which show you the route you're taking, so you can watch
for each stop along the way. If you want to see the route you'll
be taking, the Munich Airport website has detailed maps, schedules,
prices, etc. Click
here for the S-Bahn maps and timetables.
You
can take either the S-1 or S-8. Both will take you
to the main train station (Hauptbahnhof). From there you can either
take the subway (U-Bahn), or take a taxi to JYM.
S-Bahn
Ticket: Buy a ticket at the automatic machines next to the escalator
stairs which lead down to the S-Bahn trains. The ticket will cost
€9.50 and the machines take Euro bills. Select the button for
Munich. You'll get a ticket which reads "Einzelfahrt"
and "ab 4 Zonen" (all trains go to the main train station,
so you can get on any one which is ready to leave.) Once you stamp
your ticket (see below), it will be valid for the ride to the main
station, as well as the transfer to JYM.
But
before you go down the escalator, be sure to insert your ticket
into the Entwerter at the top of the escalator. Translated,
this literally means your ticket has now been "devalued",
i.e. stamped, validated, and ready to use (gosh, isn't German great?!).
Don't forget to do this, because taking public transportation without
a valid ticket (Schwarz fahren) will cost you about a $50
(and the trains are controlled by roaming "controllers"
who just might ask you to present your ticket for inspection).
The
S-bahn ride from the airport to downtown Munich takes about 40 minutes.
Change at Hauptbahnhof on to the U2 (Red Line), going
north to Königsplatz (one stop). Exit at the front of
the train and follow the signs to the "Briennerstrasse"
exit. Cross Briennerstrasse, then walk to your left until you reach
Richard-Wagner-Strasse. Turn right onto Richard-Wagner-Strasse and
follow the street until you reach Gabelsbergerstrasse. The entrance
to JYM is around the corner to your left.
Directions
to JYM by Taxi
If
you prefer, you could also take a taxi from the airport directly
to JYM. It's much more expensive, and the time to downtown Munich
is actually a bit longer than with the S-Bahn, but a taxi will take
you right to the door of JYM. The cab ride will cost approximately
$65 plus tip (5-10%), and paid in Euro of course.
Directions
to JYM from the Main Train Station (Hauptbahnhof)
If
by chance you are arriving by train from another German city, you
most likely will arrive in Munich at the main station. Buy a Kurzstrecke
ticket from the automatic machines. From the Hauptbahnhof, take
the U2 (Red Line), going north to Königsplatz (one stop).
Exit at the front of the train and follow the signs to the "Briennerstrasse"
exit. Cross Briennerstrasse, then walk to your left until you reach
Richard-Wagner-Strasse. Turn right onto Richard-Wagner-Strasse and
follow the street until you reach Gabelsbergerstrasse. The entrance
to JYM is around the corner to your left on Gabelsbergerstrasse.
(Or, take a taxi from the Hauptbahnhof to JYM. Simply say
you want to go to the corner of Gabelsbergerstrasse and Richard-Wagner-Strasse.)
All
this may sound incredibly complicated when its described in such
detail, but after you do it, you'll realize just how easy it really
is!
