JYM
a Distinguished Tradition
The
junior year abroad tradition in Germany began with JYM in 1931.
This tradition was renewed in 1953 when Wayne State University re-opened
JYM as the first study abroad program in postwar Germany. For
more than 75 years, JYM has remained the standard of academically
integrated study abroad in Germany after which all similar programs
have been modeled.
Study
at LMU Munich - Germany's top ranked university
As
a JYM student, you'll be enrolled at the prestigious LMU
Munich. A vast selection of courses in 150 degree-granting subject
areas awaits you in practically any
major or double-major.
Social,
Cultural, and Academic Immersion
You'll experience Germany as only an insider can. Our insistence
upon full immersion
and university integration
has stood the test of time, and defines how JYM is different from
other study abroad programs in Germany today.
Undergraduate
Research
Whether your interests include contemporary history and politics,
literature, theater and film, international business, the sciences
or philosophy, the archives
and libraries of Munich offer unique opportunities for undergraduate
research.
German
Language Proficiency
JYM provides a German
language program throughout the year that will accompany you
through the various stages of your JYM experience.
Academic
Quality
JYM undergoes periodic external review to ensure that it meets the
highest standards in academic programming, support, and student
achievement (Academic
Program Review).
JYM
Scholarships
JYM distributes $50,000
in scholarship awards annually because of alumni and friends of
the program who believe in the unique value of the JYM experience.

Discover
Germany - Explore Europe

you wish to follow the Romantic Road to Rothenburg ob der Tauber,
or spend the weekend in Rome, Munich is ideally located to begin

Beyond
the Books
There's more to study abroad than academics - even the 18th century
poet Lessing knew
that! Whatever your Freizeit interests may be, JYM can help
you become involved in many extracurricular
activities.

Internships
In today's competitive job market, experience matters. JYM can provide
you with overseas
internship experience through our international network of business
and public sector partners.
Honors
Program for the Study of European Ideas
JYM invites you to accept the challenge and consider the rewards
of participating in our Honors
Program for the Study of European Ideas. Recent students have
been selected for internships at the German Bundestag, or invited
to participate in the Young Professionals Program sponsored by the
Aspen Institute Berlin.
Networking

programs will allow you meet people with leadership responsibilities
from the public and private sectors on both sides of the Atlantic,
internationally known poets, scholars, and musicians.
Real
Global Competency
Knowledge, performance, and experience comprise the foundation of
real global
competency. This will set you apart as you pursue your career
goals.
Alumni
Job Placement
JYM has a stellar record of placing alumni in jobs that require
German language proficiency and meaningful overseas experience.
JYM is the only study abroad program that posts current job openings
for its alumni through our JYM
Job Board.
Graduate
School and Fellowships
JYM has an outstanding record of supporting alumni with their applications
to graduate school or with their proposals for post-JYM
fellowships. Many students return to Germany soon after JYM
with the Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies
(Wharton School of Business), or as recipients
of prestigious awards such as the German Chancellor Scholarship
or Fulbright Fellowships.
Distinguished
Alumni
Great careers begin somewhere, and many had their start in Munich
with JYM:
·
professors at the University of California-Berkeley, University
of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, Yale University and many more
·
chairmen, vice-presidents, CEOs and CFOs of major corporations
such as Random House, Inc. and the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, or entrepreneurs
who founded their own businesses, e.g. European Computer Telecoms
AG
·
graduates of top-ranked law, medical, and business schools
such as Georgetown, Harvard, or the University of Pennsylvania's
Wharton School
·
successful authors, including the best-selling
novelist Jonathan
Franzen (JYM 1979-80).

JYM
has gone far beyond its origins in the junior year abroad tradition,
while remaining true to the priniciples of the program's founders
more than 75 years ago. Today we
especially encourage students to view their JYM
experience within the larger context of sustaining productive
German-American relations. We want students to view study
abroad as part of a continuum of experiences, rather than as a singular
episodic adventure. Therefore we have introduced a progressive series
of programs that take place before, during, and well beyond our
students' participation in the program. JYM's holistic approach
to education abroad is unique. No other program has introduced a
continuum of initiatives that . . .
·
