JYM Program Updates and COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan

The Junior Year in Munich is America's oldest study abroad program in Germany, and is affiliated with Germany's top ranked research university: Ludwig Maximilians Universität München (LMU Munich).

Whatever your major, whatever your passion, JYM can help you design a program of study by combining JYM and University courses with a research project or possibly an internship.

Students from all accredited US colleges and universities are welcome to apply (juniors, seniors, and qualified second semester sophomores).

JYM offers academic year and one-semester program options. All in German. All with JYM!

Study Abroad in Munich

Why study abroad in Munich? Of all the places you can study in Germany, Munich offers the best of all worlds. Nowhere else in Germany do tradition and customs merge with all the excitement and opportunity of a modern big city that is home to Germany's top universities and businesses, and all less than an hour from the Alps!

Munich has been rated one of the "Ten Most Dynamic Cities" of the world by Newsweek, the "most liveable city in the world" by Monocle, the #1 Best University City by QS Best Student Cities in 2018, and the #1 most sustainable, eco-city in Germany according to the 2019 World Atlas.

Academic Year

Discover what it’s like to live abroad for year and call Munich your home!

Why study abroad in Germany for a year? A year abroad offers you more time to adjust to your new surroundings and strengthen your German, more time to explore academic options as your German improves, more time to discover how to get involved in Munich, greater opportunity to experience the many dimensions of year-long study abroad, more time to spend with new friends and share unique experiences together, much more opportunity for travel, and - by the second semester - more time left to take it all in and enjoy Munich as home!

JYM scholarships for academic year students may reduce the Net Program Fee to only $12,000 per semester (tuition, insurance and housing!). That's more than half the cost of the only other similar program in Munich! See how we compare!

The JYM Academic Year program begins with an On-Site Orientation in late September, followed by enrollment at LMU Munich where the semester begins mid-October. Some JYM Program features are only available to full-year students because they take place during the first semester and between semesters.

One-Semester Options

Imagine spending your spring and summer in Munich with JYM!

The JYM Second Semester program begins with an On-Site Orientation, followed by enrollment at LMU Munich for the second semester (called the Sommersemester in German) which runs April through July.

Beyond the books there is plenty to explore and enjoy under the famous Bavarian blue skies of summer: sidewalk cafes, the English Garden, mountain lakes and hiking trails, many museums and lots of festivals, including StuStaCulum: a four-day, open-air music and theater festival at the Studentenstadt!

Because the first semester at LMU Munich runs from October through early February, it is normally not practical to enroll for the first semester only, although some students have done so (and then decided to stay for the year!).
