Mark
Ferguson received a B.A. in German and History, as well as his M.A.
and Ph.D. in German from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before
coming to Wayne State University in 1991, he taught at the Universität-Essen
in Germany, and at Bates College in Maine.
As
Senior Lecturer within the Department of German and Slavic Studies at
Wayne State, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in language,
literature, and culture; as Program Director of Wayne State's Junior
Year in Munich - the oldest US study abroad program in Germany (est.
1953), Prof. Ferguson oversees all operations on both sides of the Atlantic.
Prof.
Ferguson's interest in international education dates back to 1973 when
he participated in the American Field Service (AFS) summer program to
Thailand. While in college, he studied at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität
with Wayne State's Junior Year in Freiburg program (1976-77).
He
has lived in Europe for seven years (Freiburg, Bonn, Mainz, Berlin,
Essen, Paris) - at times as a student, at times working for news agencies
and language schools, and ultimately teaching German literature at the
University of Essen.
Prof.
Ferguson is a member of the Founding Council of the International Fund
for the 21st Century, an alumnus of the Herbert Quandt Foundation's
Transatlantic Forum (TAF), and President of the German Bridge partnership
initiative within Wayne State's College of Liberal Arts. He has also
advised non-profit corporations and conducted intercultural training
seminars for employees relocating overseas.
