"Living in StuStadt was one of the most valuable experiences of JYM. You cannot help but meet other people from other areas in Germany/Europe. Living there forces you to use your German and thus improve your speaking abilities."
(William, University of Dallas)
While on JYM you'll experience Germany as only an insider can. Our insistence upon full immersion and university integration has stood the test of time, and defines how JYM is different from many other study abroad programs in Germany today. And of course, it goes without saying that German is the official language of JYM and all instruction is in German.
Language learning is not an add-on at JYM; it stands at the center of our mission. Students don't just take language classes, they make progress in relation to the proficency standards of their European counterparts. As a JYM student, you'll be living in the Studentenstadt, where you'll be surrounded by German 24/7, interact with other German and European students studying in Munich, and make new friends. JYM can also connect you to organizations and social groups that match your interests. Imagine what it will feel like when you wake up one day in StuSta and realize you had been dreaming in German!
JYM is also an investment in your future. The combination of first-hand knowledge of German society and culture, verifiable advanced foreign language proficiency and extensive intercultural experience overseas, has allowed graduates of JYM to acquire marketable global competency credentials. In fact, many alumni have been hired right after graduation – not because of their major or the school they attended – but precisely because they could speak German and knew what is was like to live in Germany.
In recent years JYM alumni have been able to launch exciting careers in global human resource management and logistics / global supply chain management (as German majors!), and many even have been sent back to work in Germany by their employers. Others have returned to Germany for graduate study (a lot cheaper than in the US!), or as recipients of Fulbright fellowships.
If you want it all – a once-in-a-lifetime study abroad experience at the best university in Germany, in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, that can also give you an edge on the job market after graduation – become part of the JYM tradition!
