This year the AATG-Mi
spring meeting will take place on Saturday, April 8, and again will be hosted by the Department of German & Slavic Studies at Wayne State University. With support from the Department's Uwe K. Faulhaber Endowment for Applied German Studies, we have been able to arrange for Prof. Jamie Rankin of Princeton University to conduct this year's workshop on second language acquisition and German language pedagogy. Prof. Rankin will conduct two interactive sessions, one on oral corrective feedback and another on communicative task design.

Prof. Rankin is coordinator of language teaching and pedagogy in the Department of German at Princeton University. After completing a Ph.D. in German literature at Harvard University, Prof. Rankin went on to specialize in second language acquisition and pedagogy at the University of Hawaii. His current research focuses on the dynamics of foreign language classrooms, with particular emphasis on classroom interaction and the role it plays in teaching and teacher training. He has published studies on his research, including two articles that were awarded Die Unterrichtspraxis prize for Best Articles of the Year in 1999. He also is co-author of Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik (Houghton Mifflin), one of the leading German textbooks used in the USA. In 1996 he was a recipient of the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching at Princeton.

The workshop will be from 9:15 am to 2:00 pm in 368 Manoogian Hall on the campus of WSU (directions and parking information will be provided via e-mail). There is no registration fee for this workshop, other than the $5.00 AATG-Mi annual fee for those in attendance who are not already members. A complimentary buffet lunch will be provided at no extra charge in the University's newest resident hall dining facilities, which opened last fall.

In order to make adequate lunch reservations, pre-registration for this event is required. To register, please send an e-mail to
