2005 MI-AATG Immersion Workshop & Spring Meeting

"Interkulturelle Kompetenz im Zeitalter der Globalisierung"
Wayne State University, Detroit MI
Saturday, April 16, 2005

Today we undeniably live in an age of globalization. Business leaders, politicians, and educators alike all speak in harmony about the need for a globally competent work force, a globally competent citizenry, a globally competent generation of students. But what does it mean to be globally competent? What is meant by intercultural, cross-cultural or global competency? With little consensus regarding an answer to these questions, how can we teach global competency?

This workshop builds upon last year's successful Immersion Day Workshop with Matthias Winter ("Die Bedeutung von Sprache und kultureller Kompetenz in der globalen Wirtschaft"). By suggesting possible guidelines for the teaching of global competency as it relates to Germany and the EU, and by providing materials and exercises that can be adapted for classroom use within the context of German language instruction, we hope this workshop will inspire participants to integrate a range of global competency skills into their teaching.

This year's workshop will be conducted jointly by Prof. Mark Ferguson (Director, Junior Year in Munich, Wayne State University) and Matthias Winter (ISA Consult, Beratungsgesellschaft für Innovation, Strukturpolitik und Arbeit, mbH / Hamburg). The workshop will be conducted in German.

Friday, April 15, 2005

An evening of "glückliches Beisammensein" will be arranged for those who plan to arrive on Friday. If you wish to arrive on Friday and need lodging, please register as soon as possible so that we can reserve rooms. Based on availability, double-occupancy rooms will be arranged at no cost.
