Students reflect upon their JYM Experience

"When I first heard about JYM I thought, great! - I've found a quality year-long study abroad program in Germany. However, after being here for almost year, I see it's more than just a study abroad program you're signing up for - it's unbelievable life changes that you just can't get from studying a foreign language at home. JYM provides not only education, but a life-style. You become not just another study abroad program participant, but a "German" student for a year: you live in German student housing, and go to their university. When I think what I have gained from this program, words can not say how amazing it is - not only have I learned the language, but I have totally immersed myself in a different culture, and gained perspectives and experiences that will stay with me the rest of my life." (Greta, College of St. Benedict & St. John's University)

"I loved the fact that JYM was not a 'factory program.' JYM really cares about the students and provides amazing opportunities - Berlin Seminar, internship, hiking in the Alps, adventures in Budapest, etc. I truly believe JYM is the BEST study-abroad program in Germany." (Megan, Kenyon College)

"I loved JYM because it combined the opportunity to study at a great German university with a very helpful support system. I also liked that one can tailor their own experience to their tastes, e.g. class selection at JYM or LMU Munich." (Jason, University of Pennsylvania)

"Living in Studentenstadt was extremely beneficial because I was surrounded by students from all around the world. Their customs and ability to speak German well helped me improve my own German skills and increased my awareness of the many cultures in the world." (Ingrid, Bates College)

"A major value of the program to me was the ability to branch out into German culture, language, academia and sports, while having a solid support staff and JYM base behind me. I had a wonderful experience, but I did a lot on my own using JYM as a starting block." (Corbin, Hamilton College)

"JYM gave me the opportunity to live and mix with a completely different group of people in a new place, experience a new culture and become a member of a new society - all while helping me grow socially, intellectually and learn German! (Leslie, Principia College)

"The connections that JYM has are simply amazing. Whatever it is you could want to do here, JYM will find a way to make it possible." (Matthew, University of Pennsylvania)

"I've had another study abroad experience that I really enjoyed, but JYM is unique because it was a program that was designed a long time ago and the spirit of the program is different than what other study abroad programs offer." (Maria, The George Washington University)
